Who are we?
The East Coast Academic Center offers a fully customizable series of seminar-style programs designed to help high school students maintain and increase their academic skills during July and August. Through the use of topical current events, interesting scientific questions, and thought-provoking literature, students access essential skill sets such as written organization, writing with a purpose, forming and defending opinions, study skills, presentation skills, and methods of persuasion. Our Written Composition section also provides great practice for the SAT Writing Section. At the conclusion of the summer, students will have written at least one polished essay with a defendable thesis statement and multiple citations. In addition, students receive a personalized checklist and diagnostic report that details their areas of strength and the areas they need to continue to develop.
What do we offer?
We offer programs of either once per week or twice per week. Each session is either 3 hours long, and includes a multi-modal approach to interesting content and crucial academic skills. Students are intellectually engaged on many levels and learn and practice academic strategies.
What are our specific programs?
We offer two main seminars: Written Composition: Interpreting Multiple Viewpoints, and Speech and Debate: Discussion, Methods of Persuasion, and Public Speaking. Check out seminar offerings.
Who could benefit from our programs?
A variety of students could benefit from our small-classes, individualized instruction, and multi-modal approaches. This program was designed with High School students in mind that need a level of structure somewhere in between zero instruction, and a summer school that meets five times per week. In our program, students are able learn new skills and study strategies while defending themselves against the "backslide" that typically occurs during the summer months. By remaining engaged throughout the summer, students enter school in September with momentum and confidence.
