Instructor-led brainstorming session |
Before students break into presentation teams, the instructors lead a class brainstorming session, focusing on essential questions, major implications for our lives, and possible solutions to the problem. Students will also receive instruction on their assignment for the day. |

Group work on Proposal / Presentation |
Each day, students will be expected to create a proposal, the guidelines of which are related to the presentation of the day. For example, if the presentation was on high stakes testing, students would create a proposal for a bill for education reform. Each proposal is presented and debated at the end of the session. At this point, instructors circulate and provide individual instruction as needed. |

| 15 min | Peer Review and Evaluation | Feedback is essential to improving communication and presentation skills. At the conclusion of each session, students receive feedback from both their peers and their instructors. |

Introduce primary writing skill for the day | At the outset of each writing session, students learn a new writing skill that is the main focus of the lesson. Examples of primary writing skills are: brainstorming, developing defendable thesis statements, writing introductions and conclusions, topic sentences, varying complex sentence structures, eliminating passive voice, citations, quotations, editing, and polishing. |

SAT Essay Prompt | Students receive a writing prompt from a former SAT exam and have 25 minutes to complete a first draft. Students are exposed to the exact format and testing conditions of the SAT exam. |

Students and Instructors discuss as a group the essay prompt and brainstorm different ways to approach and to answer the question. |

Essay Examples |
Instructors pass out sample essays that illustrate various levels of achievement in answering the essay prompt, then lead a group discussion about what is good and/or bad about the sample essays. |

Writer Workshop | Students work on their independent essay project while instructors provide individualized attention, tips, and instruction. Students will either be conducting research or engaged in a step of the writing process. |
