Seminar Choices

We offer two main sections that contain elements of study skills, essay writing, discussion, methods of persuasion, and public speaking/presentation skills.

Written Composition - Interpreting Multiple Viewpoints:

In this section, students learn specific strategies related to writing such as: Brainstorming, pre-writing, free association, mapping out arguments, creating templates, effective essay structures, introductions and conclusions, embedding quotations, proofreading, and finalizing.  The emphasis of this program is to prepare for the SAT Writing Section and to teach students how to write an essay in which they effectively develop and defend a central thesis statement.  As a means to access specific writing skills, students work closely with current events and various forms of media as content from which to draw thesis statement ideas. This program culminates in a final essay that contains a defendable thesis statement and multiple citations.

Speech and Debate - Discussion, Methods of Persuasion, and Public Speaking:

In this section, students are exposed to various issues and current affairs that pertain to their lives and increase their understanding of global events. Students engage in debates, small discussions, reflective writing exercises, preparing and delivering speeches, and analyzing news and advertising sources. An activity that occurs during every session is an open debate that pits students against instructors. Students are asked to assume one side of an argument, efficiently gather their thoughts, and then express their opinion clearly and concisely. Students also study advanced presentation skills such as the effects of posture, voice, movements, lighting, visual aids, technology, and room layout and apply these techniques to their own personally-crafted speeches and presentations. In addition to skill-based work, students also focus on researching content, the rational progression of thought, stating and defending opinions, and studying the similarities and differences between written and oral arguments. During each session, students will make either an individual or a group presentation.
